AOI has become an essential tool in today’s surface mount (SMT) manufacturing environment. Growing trends towards the use of smaller components increases the need for AOI. It provides a means of inspecting for common defects and enables the highest level of quality assurance. Using both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) inspection strategies is proving to be the most cost-effective solution as technology advances.
The primary advantage of 3D inspection over 2D inspection is that it provides true volumetric height data. Co-planarity on lifted leads and other height sensitive devices can be detected easily. As height data can be measured, AOI programmers can specify the precise height tolerance acceptable for a specific component. Using 3D inspection for co-planarity detection also provides a significant reduction in false calls when compared with 2D inspection. We have selected the Mirtec MV-3L as the best solution to support our customers and we are looking forward to commissioning this within our high=tech production facilities.
